The Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal has staged a protest at Dhaka University, condemning a tweet from the X (formerly known as Twitter) account of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami chief Shafiqur Rahman that called working women “prostitutes”.
On Sunday afternoon, the BNP’s student affiliate conducted a protest march from Madhur Canteen to the foot of the Aparajeyo Bangla statue through TSC, bdnews24.com reports.
They shouted slogans calling for an apology for the post.
Afterwards, Chhatra Dal President Rakibul Islam Rakib said at a rally, “Our message from this protest is that he (the Jamaat chief) must definitely apologise to these women.”
“If he does not apologise, we will be forced to conduct an even larger protest.”
He said, “If Jamaat-e-Islami gains even the slightest political power in Bangladesh, it will not only become a threat to women, but to everything in Bangladesh.”
Chhatra Dal General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir said, “Many say his account was hacked. We say that his head was hacked and he has unmasked his true face.”
Stating that the Jamaat chief had contested three elections previously and only received 41,000 votes, he added: “Now he has realised that the people of his constituency no longer trust in him. That is why he has come to Dhaka and is contesting the Dhaka-15 seat.”
