Protesters on Friday blocked the Shahbagh intersection in the capital, demanding justice for the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi, the martyred spokesperson of Inquilab Mancha.
A large number of students and members of the public joined the demonstration, calling for a fair investigation, the immediate arrest of those responsible, and exemplary punishment, according to local media reports
Leaders and activists of Inquilab Mancha, along with general students and citizens, brought out a protest procession after Jummah prayers on Friday (December 26) from the Dhaka University Central Mosque. The procession marched to Shahbagh, where protesters began a sit-in, with the gathering swelling as time passed.
During the demonstration, protesters chanted various slogans demanding justice for the killing of Osman Hadi.
Addressing the protesters, Inquilab Mancha Member Secretary Abdullah Al Jaber said, “There has been enough restraint. It is because of this restraint that Osman Hadi’s blood has been shed on this land. We cannot step back anymore. This street protest is to seek justice for the blood of the martyr. Until government advisers come here and face the people, we will not leave this place.”
Jaber also announced that protesters were prepared to stay overnight at the Shahbagh intersection if necessary.
Osman Hadi was shot in the capital’s Bijoynagar area on December 12 in the afternoon. He was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later shifted to Evercare Hospital. On December 15, he was flown to Singapore for advanced treatment, where he died while undergoing treatment on December 18.
