Redwan Ahmed has resigned as secretary general of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and officially joined the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

On Wednesday afternoon, he joined the BNP at the chairperson’s Gulshan office -- welcomed into the party by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

Fakhrul announced that Redwan will contest in the February elections from Cumilla-7.

Redwan said, “We have worked together in joint movements, and I agree that BNP should leave certain seats for its allies. However, my party Chairman Oli Ahmad does not support this decision. Most permanent committee members of the LDP and leaders nationwide stand with me.”

He added, “I hope Oli Ahmed will come to a wise decision and agree with BNP’s electoral understanding. Regardless of his stance, I will contest in the election in line with BNP’s agreement.

“Having started my political journey with the BNP, today I officially rejoin the party to contest the election.”

Redwan also confirmed he had submitted his resignation to the LDP chairman and said that most permanent committee members and LDP leaders across the country would now support BNP candidates.

Welcoming him, Fakhrul said: “I congratulate Redwan Ahmad. His return is like a son coming home, strengthening the BNP further.”
