The National Citizen Party (NCP) has issued show-cause notices to five of its leaders for travelling to Cox’s Bazar on the first anniversary of the July mass uprising.

The notices were issued on Wednesday (August 6) in five separate letters signed by the party’s Joint Member Secretary Saleh Uddin Sifat.

The five senior leaders who have been served show-cause notices are NCP’s Chief Organiser (Southern Region) Hasnat Abdullah, Chief Organiser (Northern Region) Sarjis Alam, Joint Conveners Dr Tasnim Jara, Khaled Saifullah and Nasiruddin Patwari.

No prior information or explanation regarding this visit was communicated to the party’s Political Council, the letters state.

“In this context, you are hereby instructed to appear in person before Convener Md Nahid Islam and Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain within the next 24 hours and submit a written explanation detailing the reasons and context behind your decision”, read the letters.

According to sources at Cox’s Bazar Airport, the five NCP leaders reached the airport around 11:30 am yesterday on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from Dhaka.

They later checked into the five-star Sea Pearl Beach Resort & Spa in Inani, Ukhiya.

The sudden arrival of the NCP leaders in Cox’s Bazar has sparked speculation and discussions in political circles.

The incident also stirred debate on social media, with rumours circulating that they held a meeting with former US Ambassador to Bangladesh, Peter Haas.

However, there is no evidence confirming Haas’s presence in Bangladesh. Later media reports clarified that he is in Washington.
