BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Sunday said that the longer the interim government stays in power, the more its weakness will become visible.
An opportunity has come to work for the public following the ultimate sacrifice of hundreds of people fighting against the fascist regime over the past 15 years, he said, warning that conspiracies to thwart the national election have started to grow.
He made the observation virtually at a meeting titled 'Purpose and Significance of the Establishment of BNP' held on the occasion of the 47th founding anniversary of the party at the Institution of Engineers in the city.
Tarique Rahman said that the formation of the current interim government is the reflection of people's intentions. "However, I don't think there is any logical reason to expect this government to function like an efficient and accountable political government."
He warned that the interim government's inability to handle situations would open space for anti-July uprising forces to create chaos, citing recent incidents, including the attack on Nurul Haque Noor, a fellow activist in the anti-fascist movement. Until a democratic government accountable to people is established through a free, fair and impartial election, democracy will remain in danger, he said.
People have started noticing that the evil forces are gradually appearing in recent times to destroy the opportunity to secure people's rights through elections, said Mr Tarique Rahman.
Some political parties are imposing conditions to serve their political purpose at a time when the interim government has taken steps to hold the national election, he said, adding that no reforms can be sustainable without an election.
Speaking on the occasion, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Alamgir said that if BNP forms the government, Tarique Rahman will be the Prime Minister. The political and economic structure of Bangladesh will change through the implementation of the party's 31-point reform proposal, said the BNP leader.
Retired Major Hafiz Uddin, a member of the party's standing committee, also spoke, among others.
