BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman reached the July 36 Expressway from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Thursday, travelling in a red-and-green vehicle under heavy security.

His motorcade entered the expressway at around 2:00 pm on December 25 and proceeded slowly amid tight protection provided by joint security forces, according to local media reports.

Earlier in the day, the aircraft carrying Tarique Rahman landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at around 11:40 am. He was received at the airport with flower garlands by his mother-in-law, Syeda Iqbal Mand Banu. Following a brief family reunion, he exchanged greetings with BNP leaders present there.

Afterwards, Tarique Rahman bid farewell to his family and boarded the red-and-green vehicle. His convoy then moved towards the 300-foot area under strict security arrangements. Standing at the front and sides of the vehicle, he waved to party leaders and activists to acknowledge their greetings.

Earlier on Thursday at 9:57 am, a flight carrying Tarique Rahman along with his wife and daughter landed at Sylhet Osmani International Airport. After a stopover there, he proceeded to Dhaka.

Tarique Rahman had left the country during the politically turbulent period under the then caretaker-backed 1/11 government. Seventeen years have passed since then. Upon re-entering the country’s airspace, he shared an emotional status message, writing: “In the skies of Bangladesh after 6,314 days.”
