Two BGCS leaders quit alleging favoritism

Md Nur Nabi, joint convener of the central committee of Bangladesh Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangsad (BGCS), and Sunny Serker, member of the organisation's DU unit, have resigned from the platform, accusing its leadership of favoritism, group-based politics, and straying from its original ideals.

At a press conference held in Shahbagh on Saturday (August 2), Nur Nabi officially announced his resignation saying, "BGCS has moved away from ideal-based student politics and has become a group-centric platform controlled by a select few.

The betrayal of the July uprising's spirit and the undemocratic leadership style forced me to take this decision," Nur Nabi said.

He alleged that many student activists who faced lawsuits, police attacks, and other hardships during the movement have been denied recognition just because of differing opinions.

According to him, the leadership has become Dhaka-centric, ignoring student representatives from other universities and failing to value the voice of general members.

In a strong accusation, he claimed that BGCS recently held an event with the help of corporate Bashundhara Group, which has damaged the organisation's credibility.

"The ideals of the July uprising have been sold out. Some leaders have turned the movement into their personal asset," he said.

He further alleged that a small circle of leaders has taken full control of all decisions, without consulting the broader student body. "Ignoring the views of general members and centralising power in a few hands is undemocratic and harmful," he added.

On the other hand, BGCS issued a press release signed by its Office Secretary Mahfuzur Rahman, stating that Nur Nabi was removed from all positions due to his absence from meetings and failure to reply to a show-cause notice.

The decision was made following a directive of Convener Abu Baker Mojumder and Member Secretary Zahid Ahsan.

Despite his removal, Nur Nabi said he is now working to form a new student platform. "I can no longer be a part of this broken and group-driven politics. I call upon like-minded students to join a new, democratic student movement," he declared.

Earlier on Friday night, Sanny Sarker announced his resignation by posting a status on his Facebook account accusing the organisation of favoritism, group-based politics, and straying from its original ideals.
