The United States and European Union missions in Dhaka have expressed condolences over the death of political activist Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, who was shot in the capital last week.
Both missions posted messages on social media on Friday mourning his death and offering sympathies to his family and supporters, reports bdnews24.com.
“The US Embassy joins the people of Bangladesh in mourning the loss of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi and offers our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and supporters,” the US Embassy said.
The EU delegation in Dhaka said it was “deeply saddened” by Hadi’s death and expressed sympathy to his family, friends and others affected.
Hadi, who rose to prominence through the July Uprising and the movement to ban the Awami League, announced that he would contest the 13th parliamentary election as an independent candidate from the Dhaka-8 constituency.
He was shot at close range on Dec 12 while travelling by rickshaw in Dhaka's Bijoynagar. Police said two assailants arrived on a motorcycle, opened fire and fled the scene.
He was initially taken in critical condition to Dhaka Medical College Hospital before being transferred to Evercare Hospital, where he was treated in intensive care.
On Dec 15, Hadi was flown to Singapore by air ambulance for advanced medical treatment. He later died there.
