State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid has said the situation of power supply has gradually improved in the current month and it will improve further in the next month.

The state minister came up with the statement while virtually addressing a discussion organised by Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) on Saturday marking National Mourning Day.

The entire country experienced power outages for 16-18 hours daily before 2009, he said, adding: "The Russia-Ukraine war made the global economic situation vulnerable and created huge uncertainty in the global energy market."

BPDB Chairman Mahbubur Rahman chaired the meeting, which was also addressed, among others, by former Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury and Power Secretary Habibur Rahman.

He requested all to be more patient and said Bangladesh will become a prosperous country under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

For improving the power situation, the premier implemented several programmes to reach electricity to every house in Bangladesh, he added.

Nasrul said Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman considered the power sector as one of the important sectors for achieving economic emancipation.

“For this reason, Bangabandhu purchased five gas fields from Shell Oil Company. These gas fields now meet 40 per cent of the country's total gas demand,” he added.
