President Md Abdul Hamid on Friday appointed Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, a judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC), as new chief justice of the country.

“The president will swear in the new chief justice at the Bangabhaban on Saturday at 7pm,” Press Secretary Joynal Abedin said.

The appointment comes within an hour after Law Minister Anisul Huq told the media that a new chief justice will be appointed on Friday.

The office of the chief justice fell vacant after Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha resigned in November last year following his leave on health grounds the previous month.

Justice Md Abdul Wahhab Miah, the most senior judge of the Appellate Division, has been performing functions as the CJ since early October, according to bdnews24.
