President Md Shahbuddin has inquired about the treatment of Gono Odhikar Parishad (GOP) President Nurul Haque Nur, who was seriously injured in a baton charge by law enforcers.
The president called Nur’s personal phone number at 10:00 am on Sunday.
GOP Media Coordinator Abu Hanif, who was next to Nur at the time, said the president had asked about the injured politician’s condition, bdnews24.com reports.
“[The president] gave assurances the government is taking steps to send Nur abroad for advanced treatment,” Hanif said. “The president wished Nur a speedy recovery, strongly condemned the attack on him and said he was deeply grieved by it. He also assured exemplary punishment for those involved in this heinous attack.”
On Friday, a clash broke out between activists of the Jatiya Party and the GOP in the Naya Paltan area. At one point, GOP activists took up positions in front of the party’s office on Box Culvert Road.
Nur was preparing to speak to the media when a group of Army and police personnel suddenly began beating him and other GOP activists with sticks.
The GOP claims that at least 50 of its activists, including Nur, were injured in the attack.
The interim government has also condemned it.
