President visits Rajshahi jail

President Md Abdul Hamid visited the Rajshahi Central Jail on Wednesday, where he was a political prisoner in 1977.

The President became emotional recalling his memories of movement and jail life and some of his movement colleagues and inmates of the jail.

Abdul Hamid had to stay in the condemned cell and Mohananda Cell of Rajshahi jail for about seven months (May-Nov) in 1977, said President's press secretary M Joynal Abedin.

The President also planted a sapling in front of division ward inside the jail, according to a BSS report.

Secretaries concerned to the President, senior military and civil officials and Inspector General (Prison) Brigadier General Syed Iftekhar Uddin, among others, accompanied the President there.

He also visited the T-shape dam on the banks of the river Padma and enjoyed the scenic beauty of the mighty Padma by a speed boat.

Earlier, the President flew to Rajshahi at about 3 pm on a two-day tour.

He will bestow the National Flag to the 1-Para Commando Battalion of Bangladesh Army at Rajshahi Cantonment at 11 am on Thursday.

The President is scheduled to return to Dhaka Thursday evening.
