Prisons holding nearly double of capacity of inmates

All of the prisons of the country are currently holding inmates nearly double the capacity, according to official data.

The number of prisoners as of April 2 this year stood at 83,837, according to the Department of Prisons under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Among the prisoners, 17,356 are convicts and the rest 66,481 are facing trial.

A total of 16,730 male convicted prisoners are staying in jails.

The number of female inmates is only 3,266. Of them, 626 females are convicted prisoners.

There are 68 jails all over the country having a total capacity of holding 42,450 inmates. Of them, the capacity for male prisoners is 40,521, while the capacity for female prisoners is 1,929.
