Protesters, including government-recommended primary school teachers and job seekers registered with the National Teacher Registration and Certification Authority (NTRC) have regrouped at Shahbagh after being forcibly removed by police.

Earlier, police used baton charges, water cannons, and tear gas to disperse the demonstrators.

Undeterred, the protesters have vowed to stay overnight as they continue their demands.

Talukder Piyas, a leader of the protesters whose application for the primary teaching post was cancelled, told bdnews24.com: “We have taken position beside the road outside the National Museum at Shahbagh. We will stay here overnight.”

However, police said the protesters' action of laying polythene sheets on one side of the road instead of directly occupying the main road led to traffic disruptions.

Earlier, around 1:30pm on Monday, protesters had gathered outside the National Museum, chanting slogans against the cancellation of their recruitment and demanding swift appointments.

The law-enforcing agencies dispersed them with baton charges, and the sound of a stun grenade was also heard at the time.

A video that has gone viral on social media shows a female protester, holding her child, falling due to the force of the water cannon.

Several other videos showing women protesters being beaten and harassed also circulated, drawing strong criticism from netizens towards police.

When asked about the incident, Dhaka Metropolitan Police spokesperson Deputy Commissioner Md Talebur Rahman, said: "The protesters had blocked the road at Shahbagh, creating an obstacle to traffic. Police took the necessary minimal actions to restore order in the area.”

Despite facing water cannons and baton charges, the protesters tried to maintain their blockade at Shahbagh throughout the afternoon.

However, they finally left the road when police began using tear gas shells.
