Assistant teachers at the government primary schools threatened on Saturday to go for nationwide work abstention and sit-in programmes if their long-standing demands of pay grades and promotions were not realised by November 15.
They under the banner of Primary Assistant Teachers Organisation Oikya Parishad made the announcement at a press conference at the National Press Club in the capital.
President of the Bangladesh Primary Assistant Teachers' Society Md Anisur Rahman said that they would observe a half-day work abstention on November 23 and 24, full-day strike on November 25 and 26, and sit-in in front of the Primary Education Directorate on November 27 if their three point-demand was not met by November 15.
Besides, they also announced to boycott all exams and observe a fast-unto-death programme from December 11 to press home their demands.
Their three demands are giving entry-level salary at Grade 11 instead of the current Grade 13, resolving the complications around obtaining higher pay grades after the completion of 10 and 16 years in job, and faster promotions, including 100 per cent promotion of assistant teachers to the head teacher posts.
