Students in solidarity with the quota movement have blocked several roads in Dhaka, including the capital’s Badda and Banani, bringing traffic to a halt in these areas.

The traffic division of police fears gridlock throughout the day in the capital due to the protests, according to bdnews24.com.

BRAC University students have taken up position on the street by blocking Badda’s Pragati Sarani on Tuesday, barring traffic from Rampura Bridge to the Notun Bazar area via Badda Link Road from 11am.

ASM Hafizur Rahman, the additional deputy police commissioner of DMP’s Gulshan Traffic Division, told bdnews24.com: “No vehicles are moving on the Badda Link Road to Natun Bazar from Rampura Bridge at the moment. Police are trying to normalise the situation.”

Banani’s Kakoli intersection has also been blocked at the same time, halting traffic on Dhaka’s Airport Road.

Additional Commissioner Munibur Rahman of the DMP Traffic Division said in addition to Badda and Banani, roads were blocked in the capital’s Birulia, Dhour, Abdullahpur and Mugda. As a result, traffic has come to a standstill in these areas.

“The students have taken up positions in Birulia, Dhour, Abdullahpur and Uttara. They occupied Mugda as well but left the area afterwards. Traffic is moving at a slow pace but the situation can cause long-term effects.”

Local news portals said the protestors also blocked railway line in Dhaka's Mohakhali level crossing protesting the attacks on students.

Students of the University of Liberal Arts (ULAB) blocked the capital's Beribadh road in Mohammadpur area on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Dhaka College unit engaged in clash with agitating students of the college during a blockade near the Science Lab intersection around 1:45pm.

According to bdnews24.com, students demonstrating against the quota system and the Bangladesh Chhatra League have announced duelling rallies at Dhaka University on Tuesday and at different universities across the country following violence on Monday.

At a press conference at 9:30pm on Monday, the protesters said they would stage anti-quota protest programmes and rallies at the Raju Sculpture and on university campuses across Bangladesh at 3pm on Tuesday.

Along with their single-point demand, the programme demands the withdrawal of the prime minister’s remarks on the protest and punishment for the attackers involved in Monday’s violence.

Following the quota protesters’ announcement, the BCL also announced a counter rally at the Raju Sculpture at 1:30pm on Tuesday.
