A clash broke out between students demanding quota reforms and police at Shanir Akhra in Dhaka on Wednesday evening following a daylong siege of the Dhaka-Chattogram highway.

Chases and counter-chases continued during the clash until 9 pm, local residents reported.

They said the Hanif Flyover Toll Plaza was set on fire.

Six people injured by shotgun bullets were brought to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, according to Bachchu Mia, DMCH Police Outpost Inspector.

Among the injured are a two-year-old child and its father, trader Babu Mia. Bachchu Mia said they were standing at the gate of their house in Dania when they were hit by bullets.

Earlier, from 10 am, quota protesters blocked the highway until the evening when police attempted to disperse them, triggering a clash.

Jatrabari Thana Inspector (Investigation) said BNP and Jamaat activists were blocking the highway using students as shields. They were dispersed in the evening.

He said he was unaware if anyone was injured.
