The operative portion of the High Court verdict that declared illegal the government circular issued in 2018 abolishing the freedom fighter quota in first and second-class government jobs has been published.

The government can reform the quota system if necessary/if it wants to, according to the operative portion of the judgment released on Thursday.

The government has the liberty to fill up vacant posts from the general merit list if any quota remains unfulfilled in any public examination, the High Court order added.

“This judgment will not create any bar upon the respondents [government] if they change, reduce or increase the ratio or percentage of the quotas relating to the aforesaid criteria as and when necessary”, Justice KM Kamrul Kader and Justice Khizir Hayat said in the judgment.

Jobseekers and students across the country have been protesting against the quota system in government jobs since earlier this month, following a High Court order on June 30 to reinstate quotas for freedom fighters.
