Members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) nabbed on Friday a person for his alleged involvement in illegal VOIP (voice over internet protocol) business in the capital's Hazaribagh area while conducting a joint operation with Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).

The arrestee was identified as Md Raju (38).

A huge quantity of illegal VOIP equipment and 1,547 SIMs (subscriber identity modules) of different mobile phone operators were also recovered from his possession.

RAB-2 Assistant Director and also Assistant Superintendent of Police Khan Asif Topu disclosed the development to the media.

He said RAB had information that a group of people had been doing unauthorised VOIP business and building infrastructure illegally by using SIM cards, laptops, SIM box and router.

The gang members were evading the government as they were dodging paying a huge amount of revenue to the state.

He added to arrest the members of the gang the elite force had reinforced its surveillance.

They arrested Md Raju conducting a raid on a house at Baddanagar under Hazaribagh Police Station in the city on early Friday.

The joint team of RAB personnel and BTRC officials searched him and recovered 235 Grameenphone SIMs, 502 ROBI, 370 Airtel and 440 Teletalk SIMs and some laptops and VOIP equipment from his possession.

Mr Topu further divulged the information that the gang had long been continuing illegal telecommunication business without taking licence from BTRC.

He also said the gang was also involved in making VOIP equipment and erecting telecommunication structures illegally, adding legal action was taken against Md Raju.
