Rajshahi jails 59 addicts for drug abuse

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have arrested 70 more people in Rajshahi while 59 of them were sentenced to different terms of jail each by mobile courts on charge of taking drugs and drug trading.

The elite force conducted drives in different areas of Natore, Chapainawabganj and Joypurhat districts on Wednesday and arrested 70 people for their alleged involvement over drug trading or consumption.

The RAB officials said they also seized 70,010 litres of country-made liquor, 1.065 kg of cannabis, 15 pieces of ample injections and some other drugs-taking instruments from their possession.

Later, the arrested were produced before three separate mobile courts.

After examining the evidences, the mobile courts sentenced 59 of them to jail. Eleven other detainees were fined Tk 36,000, according to a report by BSS.

Saiful Islam, assistant superintendent of police working with RAB, said different courts sent more than 85 addicts to jail during the last couple of days.
