NATORE, Aug 15: Commercial red spinach cultivation has brought smile on the faces of poor farmers in the district.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said an elaborate programme has been taken to make the cultivation programme a success.
The department provided all necessary support to the cultivators in this connection.
"I have brought some three decimals of land under red spinach cultivation this season as I got a bumper production last year," said farmer Amir Hossain of Boraigram upazila.
"I have already made a profit of Tk 5,500 and expecting to make Tk 3,400 more", he added.
In a recent visit in Shingra Kitchen Market, this correspondent found each kg of fresh red spinach is being sold at Tk 30 to Tk 40 in the retail market.
Peasants of different villages throng the market from the early in the morning to sell their produce.
Both chemical and organic fartilsers are being used in growing the leafy vegetable, DAE officials added.
Deputy Director of DAE Rafiqul Islam said they expected to produce some 100 tonnes of red spinach this season, but the farmers have exceeded the target as it is a profitable venture.
