Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman has called for urgent reforms to the Bar Council examination system to eliminate existing "disparities" facing law graduates.
Speaking at the closing of a law graduates’ internship programme on Monday, the minister highlighted the challenges faced by meritorious students, particularly those from English-medium backgrounds or those who studied abroad, bdnews24.com reports.
"There is a disparity in the Bar Council examination," the minister said during the event at the Supreme Court auditorium, organised by the Attorney General's Office and UNDP.
"I urge the Bar Council chairman and members to examine how the process can be made more contemporary."
The minister also revealed plans to involve young lawyers in parliamentary activities.
He said he has discussed a proposal with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to provide each member of parliament with a university intern to assist with research.
"This would serve two purposes: it allows graduates to engage with the law-making process and helps foster a sophisticated, logic-based political environment," Asaduzzaman added.
Addressing infrastructure shortages, the minister noted that the Attorney General’s Office lacks adequate seating for staff.
He confirmed that he has directed his office to include allocations in the budget for the modernisation of the facility.
To the 25 participating graduates, the minister offered career advice: "Your professional life should be built on three pillars: the Constitution, professional conduct, and unwavering honesty. Never compromise on justice, even when tempted by an easier path."
Attorney General Ruhul Quddus Kazal highlighted the significance of the UNDP-partnership programme, noting that the first batch of interns had the opportunity to observe historic cases, including appeals regarding the 13th and 15th amendments of the Constitution.
The event was attended by UNDP Resident Representative Stefan Liller, Swedish Ambassador Nicolas Weeks, Norwegian Ambassador Hakon Gulbrandsen, and Supreme Court Bar Association President AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, among others.
