A retired traffic police constable has “slashed at his sleeping son and two others” with a sharp weapon before jumping from a roof in Lakshmipur. He later died in hospital.

The incident took place on Monday morning in the Banchanagar area of the Lakshmipur municipality, said Lakshmipur Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Hossain Mohammad Raihan Kazemi, bdnews24.com reports.

The deceased, 55-year-old Nasir Ahmed, hailed from Faridganj Upazila in Chandpur. He had been living in the area with his family for the past seven years.

Initially, police believe the former policeman suffered from some mental disturbance.

The injured in the incident have been identified as Nasir’s younger son Imran, an HSC second-year student at Lakshmipur Government College, a neighbour named Mizanur Rahman Swapan, and a tenant identified by a single name as Naseer.

Relatives and locals of the injured say that Nasir had worked as a traffic police constable and retired from his job in August last year. His eldest son is disabled. A few days ago, Nasir’s wife went on a trip with his eldest son.

The night before the incident, Nasir and Imran were at home. When Nasir fell ill, Imran brought and administered medicine to him.

In the morning, Nasir stabbed Imran with a sharp weapon while he was sleeping. When Imran came out of the house bloodied, his neighbour Mizanur Rahman Swapan stepped forward to help him. At that time, Nasir also stabbed him with a knife.

Noticing the injured, another man named Naseer stepped forward to help them and was also stabbed by the retired constable.

Additional Superintendent of Police Hossain Kazemi said, “Later, Nasir was injured after he jumped from the three-storey building. When the incident was reported, the police went and rescued the injured and sent them to the Sadar Hospital. He [Nasir] was undergoing treatment for three hours before he died.”

Arup Pal, resident medical officer (RMO) of Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital said: “Four people were brought to the hospital injured. Of them, constable Nasir died while undergoing treatment.

“The injured Swapan and Imran have been sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. Another injured person has been admitted.”

Lakshmipur ASP Kazemi said, “Initially, we have learnt that the former policeman was suffering from a mental imbalance. The incident is being investigated.”
