Land owners in Dhaka city on Tuesday besieged the headquarters of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) in Dilkusha for four hours starting from 9.00 am, demanding reinstatement of Building Construction Rules, 2008.

Under a platform called Dhaka City Landowners Association (DCLA), they also demanded resignation of the RAJUK chairman and issued a seven-working-day ultimatum to suspend all RAJUK activities unless their demands are met. In addition to land owners, other stakeholders including engineers, realtors and representatives from linkage industry attended the event.

DCLA Convener Professor Dr Dewan MA Sajjad said they would launch tougher programmes if their demands fall on deaf ears.

Tanvirul Islam, a landowner, said they would start a hunger strike in front of RAJUK if the discriminatory Detailed Area Plan (DAP) is not revoked.

"The Detailed Area Plan should be scrapped as it threatens agricultural land, water reservoirs and environment. We won't leave the streets if our demands are ignored," he said.

The land owners alleged that the provisions of the latest DAP do not allow a realtor to construct high-rise buildings next to narrow lanes in many parts of the city, leading to a lower floor area ration (FAR) and consequently fewer housing units on a plot.
