A rickshaw puller succumbed to heatstroke in Dhaka city on Monday.

The deceased was identified as 45-year-old Abdul Awal, son of Azam Ali from Singha village under Lakhai upazila in Habiganj district. Abdul resided in Narayanganj and maintained his livlihood by riding a rickshaw in Sanir Akhra and surrounding areas of the capital.

A police official at Shahbagh Police Station told the FE that Abdul Awal had become seriously ill due to a severe heatwave sweeping across the country. He was driving his rickshaw on the road behind Dhaka Nursing College in the capital that afternoon when he fell ill.

The rickshaw puller was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where the attending doctor declared him dead at around 4:30pm, he said.

Initially, it was thought that rickshaw puller Awal had died from heatstroke, according to the police official.

However, he noted that the exact cause of death would be confirmed after the postmortem report is received.
