RMG workers resume protests, demand cancellation of 'discriminatory' wage board

Ready-made garment workers staged demonstrations in different parts of the city and Gazipur for sixth consecutive day on Saturday demanding cancellation of ‘discriminatory wage board’ announced by the government for them.

The protesting workers took to the streets in the morning and put up barricade at Mirpur-1 and Ansar Camp area in Kalyanpur, halting vehicular movement in the areas.

Besides, the workers are also staging demonstrations at Shewrapara and Kazipara areas.

They also vandalised several establishments on the footpath in the area, said witnesses.

In Gazipur, hundreds of workers of different garment factories started demonstrations in the morning.

At one stage, the workers of ‘Target Fashion Factory’ tried to block Dhaka-Gazipur highway in Chandona Chowrasta area but police dispersed them by charging baton.

Meanwhile, workers tried to block Dhaka-Tangail highway in BSCIC area in Konabari, leading to a chase and counter-chase between police and workers, according to UNB news agency.

Besides, the authorities of at least 30 garment factories of the areas have declared their factories shut for today following the unrest.

Additional police have been deployed to avoid further trouble.
