Road Transport and Bridges, Railways and Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam, on Thursday, warned that bus companies charging extra fares during the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr travel rush will face strict action, including cancellation of their route permits.

The minister made the remark after a preparatory meeting at the Secretariat to ensure safe and smooth Eid travel, according to local media reports.

Responding to journalists, he said transport operators have no scope to charge fares beyond the government-approved rate. “Specific fares have been fixed. If anyone takes even one taka more than the approved fare, inform us, and exemplary action will be taken,” he said.

He added that transport owners attending the meeting assured the government they would not charge extra fares.

“If any operator collects additional fare, the route permit of that bus company will be cancelled. If criminal offences occur while collecting the extra fare, those responsible will face legal punishment,” the minister said.
