Rumeen Farhana sends gifts after ‘misunderstanding’, says Hasnat

National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Organiser (South) Hasnat Abdullah has said there was a “misunderstanding” with BNP International Affairs Secretary Rumeen Farhana.

“She sent her people to us to see whether we had any problems here. She also sent some gifts. It is positive news for us, and of course, we should welcome it,” he said at an uthan boithok in Brahmanbaria’s Bijoynagar upazila on Saturday night. Rumeen Farhana hails from the same upazila.

He said the NCP was often labelled “anti-election” while the BNP continued to talk about polls.

“We are calling for elections and two more things. We are saying we need elections, reforms, and justice,” Hasnat added.

Highlighting the need for reforms, he said there were still no guarantees that arbitrary arrests would not take place and families would be notified after arrests.

He lamented that reforms were “a very basic thing” but remained unaddressed.

To underline his point of reforms, Hasnat referred to the recent attack on Gono Odhikar Parishad Convenor Nurul Haque Nur, calling it “a warning for us.”

He also recalled that Tarique Rahman had been tortured and forced to leave home, while Khaleda Zia had faced consequences.

Without changes to existing rules, the NCP leader warned that others could face the same consequences.

Noting that changing the rules to prevent such outcomes was what they called reforms, he said, “We must be united on this.”

NCP Joint Member Secretary SM Saif Mostafiz and Joint Convener (South) Mahmuda Alam also addressed the meeting.
