Police foiled an attempt by dismissed members of BDR (Bangladesh Rifles and now Border Guard Bangladesh) to march towards the State Guest House Jamuna, the official residence of the chief adviser, to press home their three-point demand, including their reinstatement.

On Monday morning, protesters gathered at the Shahbagh intersection and staged a demonstration. Police cordoned them off, but they forced their way through the law enforcers, began to parade and gathered at Kakrail Mosque.

As repeated requests by police to clear the road fell on unresponsive ears, they swung into action, using truncheons and water cannons, throwing stun grenades and lobbing tear gas shells. The incident left some of the demonstrators injured.

An official at Ramna Police Station said the demonstrators had left following the action. A total of 13 protesters were taken into police custody. They will scrutinise the identities of the detained individuals, added the police official.

The former BDR members who were dismissed and 'victimised' in 2009 following the Pilkhana massacre were released from jail after the student-led popular uprising against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5, 2024.
