Salman F Rahman, private industry and investment affairs advisor to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, has been remanded in custody for three days as part of an investigation into a murder case stemming from an Anti-discrimination Student Movement protest in the capital’s Jatrabari area.

The remand order was issued on Monday by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Saifuzzaman following a court hearing.

The court session, held under tight security, was attended by state prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi, who confirmed the court’s decision.

Jatrabari Police Station Sub-Inspector Mujahidul Islam had applied for a 7-day remand order to question Salman over his involvement in the murder case.

During the hearing, Faruqi argued in favour of the remand, while the defence team countered with a plea to scrap the remand and grant bail. The court then ordered a three-day remand to question him.

According to the case dossier, during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement on Jul 21, 2024, police and Awami League leaders and activists opened fire on a procession of students and civilians in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area. The shooting reportedly claimed the life of Md Amin, who died on the spot.

Following the incident, Amin’s father filed a murder case at Jatrabari Police Station, naming 99 individuals as suspects and identifying an additional 100 to 150 as unknown suspects. Salman has been listed as one of the accused in the case.
