Sammilita Parishad sweeps BGMEA election

Faruque Hassan-led Sammilita Parishad has swept the biennial election to the apex apparel trade body — Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) — for the term of 2021-23.

His panel bagged 24, out of 35 director posts of which 26 were contested in Dhaka and nine in Chattogram, while ABM Shamsuddin’s Forum got only 11 posts.

In Dhaka, Sammilita Parishad won 17 posts and Forum nine; while in Chattogram, the former bagged seven and the latter secured two.

The Sammilita Parishad leader, Faruque, bagged 1,204 votes, the highest received by a candidate in this biennial BGMEA election.

The Forum panel leader, Shamsuddin, lost the election.

The current BGMEA President, Rubana Huq, contesting from Shamsuddin’s panel, won the election with 1,157 votes, the second highest received by a candidate in this election.

After vote counting, the Election Commission announced the preliminary results around 1.00am on Monday.

Elections to the BGMEA board of directors took place simultaneously in Dhaka and Chattogram from 9.0 am to 7.0 pm on Sunday.

A total of 1996 BGMEA member voters — 1604 from Dhaka and 392 from Chattogram — out of 2314 cast their votes to elect the new board of directors of the BGMEA.

Elections to elect a president, seven vice-presidents and other office-bearers would be held on April 16 and the new board would take charge of the trade body on April 20.

Generally, the leader of the winning panel is elected BGMEA president and Faruque is expected to be the next president.

A total of 70 candidates have vied for 35 posts on the BGMEA board of directors.

In Dhaka, 52 have stood in the race for 26 posts while in Chattogram 18 for nine posts.
