The advisory council of the interim government has given its final approval to the draft of the ‘Supreme Court Judges’ Appointment Ordinance, 2025’.
This approval came during a meeting held on Thursday, said a press release issued by Md Shafiqul Islam, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Supreme Court.
“It is expected that the draft of the ordinance will be finalized soon subject to the routine vetting of the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Department. It has also been expected that such phased implementation of the Judicial Reform Roadmap announced by the Chief Justice will play an important role in bringing transparency to the judicial process and establishing justice in the country,” also read the press release.
Since assuming office on August 11, 2024, Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed has undertaken various initiatives aimed at improving the country’s judiciary. As part of this effort, on September 21, 2024, he unveiled a roadmap for judicial modernisation, emphasising the establishment of an Independent Judicial Appointment Council to oversee the appointment of judges to the higher judiciary, among other key reforms.
In line with this roadmap, the Bangladesh Supreme Court submitted a proposal to the Law Ministry on October 28, 2024, following extensive research on the laws, rules, regulations, and practices concerning the appointment of High Court judges in different countries around the world.
