SC suspends half day proceedings in respect to Barrister Mainul

In honour of Barrister Mainul Hosein, a veteran jurist who died on Saturday evening, Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan, after consulting with the other judges of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, suspended half-day proceedings of both the divisions of the highest court on Sunday morning.
A five-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by the Chief Justice announced that the apex court would not continue proceedings of its second-half session from 11 am to 1.30 pm.
He made another announcement before a Namaz-e-Janaza that was held on the premises of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) after the Zuhr prayers on Sunday, saying that the High Court benches also would not hold proceedings of their second-half session from 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm.
Barrister Mainul Hosein’s second Namaz-e-Janaza was held at the Supreme Court Bar Association premises. After the Namaz-e-Janaza floral wreaths were placed on behalf of the Chief Justice, the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), and many other organisations,.
Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan, Appellate Division’s Justice M Enayetur Rahim, Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam and Justice Md Abu Zafor Siddique, High Court Division’ Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif, Justice J B M Hassan, Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder, Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam attended the Namaz-e-Janaza.
Former Minister and incumbent Member of Parliament Anwar Hossain Manju, senior jurist Barrister M Amir-Ul Islam, Attorney General AM Amin Uddin, former Attorney General A F Hassan Ariff, Additional Attorney General SM Munir, SCBA President Md Momtazuddin Fakir, former SCBA President Zainul Abedin, SCBA Secretary Abdun Nur Dulal, former SCBA Secretary Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokan, among others, were also present in the Janaza.
During a short speech, Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan said, “When our judiciary fell into a crisis during the regime of H M Ershad and High Court benches were installed at different places, then he (Barrister Mainul) made an important contribution along with Barrister Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed and other senior lawyers in the eighth amendment case.”
Barrister Mainul, also Printer and Publisher of The New Nation and former Law, Information and Land Adviser of the now-defunct Caretaker Government, breathed his last at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka at the age of 83.
He had been suffering from various health complications over the last year and had been undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital for the past several days.
Barrister Mainul Islam's first Namaz-e-Janaza was held at the Baridhara Jame Mosque and Islamic Centre in Dhaka City at 10:30 am on Sunday. The third Namaz-e-Janaza took place at the New Nation office at 2:40 pm. Later, his body was taken to the Azimpur Graveyard for burial.
