The police have conducted searches in a canal in West Bengal of India for Bangladeshi parliamentarian Anwarul Azim’s body, which is believed to have been dismembered.

Jihad Howlader, a butcher who allegedly cut the body into pieces, was arrested by the CID of West Bengal from Kolkata on Thursday. A Barasat court on Friday granted police 12 days to interrogate him in custody, according to a report of Prothom Alo.

CID officials said they learned that the killers scattered the dismembered parts of the body in different areas in bags to ensure that nobody traces it.

According to CID sources, police conducted a search in a canal at Bhangor under 24 Pargonas district of West Bengal but found nothing until Friday evening.

Meanwhile, a Dhaka court has granted the police eight days to grill in remand the three suspects arrested in Bangladesh, including Shimul Bhuiyan, who is suspected to be the main killer.

According to investigations, Azim was murdered on 13 May in an apartment in Kolkata.
