New Delhi police have arrested a masked man for driving through one of the boundary gates of the Delhi Legislative Assembly premises before fleeing, said officials.
The incident took place in a stunning breach of security in the Indian capital on Monday afternoon, according to NDTV.
The arrestee was identified as Sarabjit Singh and the car, carrying an Uttar Pradesh registration number, was recovered in a densely populated residential neighbourhood in North Delhi.
The incident follows a Mar 24 bomb threat at the assembly during the last budget session.
The car entered the assembly premises breaking through Gate No 2 around 2pm despite heightened security, NDTV reported.
Sarabjit immediately stopped the vehicle, alighted off it “calmly”, placed a bouquet near the entrance, and then sped away, it added.
“The driver proceeded towards the office of Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta and placed a flower bouquet near the porch before retreating,” a Delhi Secretariat told the Indian broadcaster.
A marigold garlands were seen around Sarabjit neck and he was also carrying a bag.
Before fleeing, he sat inside the assembly speaker’s car and put the bouquet there, sources told NDTV.
However, no explosive or suspicious object was inside the bouquet, officials said.
