The upcoming elected government of Bangladesh, following the interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus, will face key challenges in ensuring national security, democracy, and the rule of law, observed speakers at an event in the capital.
The speakers also advocated ensuring accountability in all spheres of the country aiming to establish a good governance system and public welfare.
They were addressing a policy dialogue titled "National Security and Law Enforcement Challenges to Democratic Governance" organised by Centre for Governance Studies (CGS) at CIRDAP Auditorium in the capital on Monday.
CGS president Zillur Rahman moderated the event.
The participants stressed the need to establish a healthy trend of politics in the country.
They also suggested motivating the law enforcing agencies, especially the police.
About national security, they viewed, it should not be ensured only defending the country's frontiers with the neighbouring countries but also considering the current geo politics.
They also noted that people's rights must be preserved and there must be rule of law and independent judiciary system.
Chairperson of Centre for Security and Development Studies Major General (retd) AMSA Amin said that the country's political parties should take lessons from the history.
He also said there has been no real democracy in the country's history since the independence.
"We must establish a healthy trend of political system in the country," he said highlighting the importance of patriotism for the country.
He said that Bangladesh must be a stronger nation to defy external influence or pressure.
He put forward some recommendations to the upcoming government democratically elected through the national election slated for February 12 this year that include appointing a defence minister, establishing a National Security Council, ensuring accountability of the MPs and establishing a National Consensus Council.
Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) and also the country's sole representative to the UN Interpol Dr M Enamul Haque stressed having the guts to speak the truth boldly.
CGS president Zillur Rahman said that the people of the country are expecting that the next elected government will be able to ensure a stable and secured Bangladesh.
Member of Bangladesh Nationalist Party ( BNP) Advisory Council Jahir Uddin Swapan, former State Minister for Information Prof Abu Sayeed, Major General ( retd) Monirul Islam Akand, educationist Mosharraf Ahmed Thakur, Barrister Mohammad Ali, Advocate Subrata Chowdhury, Dr Ali Akbar, former Ambassador Munshi Fayez Ahmed and Major ( retd) A S M Shamsul Arefin were present, among others.
