Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury was sworn in as the Speaker of the 12th Parliament in its maiden session on Tuesday.
Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury was elected Speaker in the first session of the 12th parliament when Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader proposed her name and Chief Whip Nur E Alam Chowdhury seconded the name.
Deputy Speaker Shamsul Huq Tuku said that as there was only one name proposed for the post, Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury was elected unopposed.
Later, the session was adjourned for 20 minutes, and the Speaker went to the President’s chamber in Parliament to take the oath. President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina greeted Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury with a bouquet.
After that, the session started again with newly elected speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.
Shamsul Huq Tuku from the Awami League was re-elected as the deputy speaker.
Awami League MP AB Tajul Islam proposed his name, and another AL MP Mohammad Mokbul Hossain seconded the name.
Speaker Shirin Sharmin said that as there was only one name proposed for the post, Shamsul Huq Tuku was elected unopposed.
