The government has urged businesses to support energy-saving measures while signalling possible adjustments ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.

Power and Energy Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood Tuku made the call at a meeting with business leaders, including shop owners’ associations, at Bidyut Bhaban in Dhaka on Saturday.

He said the decision has been taken for three months to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply during the summer and irrigation season, amid global uncertainties affecting fuel supply.

The minister, however, noted that the schedule could be reviewed in consultation with business leaders before Eid.

According to a ministry statement, the government has prioritised energy conservation, encouraging the use of energy-efficient equipment alongside reduced power consumption.

Business leaders at the meeting assured the government of their cooperation while placing several demands and recommendations.

In response, the minister urged them to support the temporary measures and said their proposals would be considered.

Earlier, following a cabinet meeting on Thursday night, Cabinet Secretary Mahbub Hossain announced new office hours from 9am to 4pm for government and private offices, with bank transactions set from 9am to 3pm.

Under the decision, all markets, shops, and shopping malls must close by 6pm.

However, grocery markets, pharmacies, hotels, restaurants, and emergency services remain exempt.

The Bangladesh Shop Owners Association had called for a revision, proposing opening hours from 11am to 8pm.
