SI gets suspension for demanding extortion, assaulting truck driver

A sub-inspector of Tangail district police was suspended temporarily for assaulting a truck driver for extortion on Saturday.

The decision came following a two-hour blockade on the eastern part of Bangabandhu Bridge in Tangail protesting the assault, said Shariful Islam, additional superintendent of Tangail police.

The suspended police official Sub-inspector Noor Alam of Bangabandhu Bridge East Police Station was also asked to bear the treatment cost of the injured truck driver, he added.

Transport workers said the SI beat up the trick driver Bakul Mia in Golchokkor area near the Bangabandhu Bridge around 6 am as the victim refused to give extortion, reports UNB.

Following the assault, the agitated transport workers blocked the highway demanding punishment of the police officer.

However, the workers withdrew the blockade around 9:30 am following the immediate suspension of the SI.
