Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Sunday said the number of SIM cards registered under a single individual will be reduced ahead of the upcoming national elections.
Speaking after the 15th meeting of the Law-and-Order Advisory Committee at the Bangladesh Secretariat in Dhaka, he said, "A person will be allowed to have a maximum of seven SIM cards."
He explained the move was aimed at preventing misuse of SIM cards in criminal activities.
"One person often commits a crime using another person's SIM card. As a result, the real culprit remains out of reach. Investigations frequently reveal that the SIM card used does not belong to the offender.
"To prevent such misuse, the number of SIM cards registered under one individual will be reduced," he said.
On the upcoming parliamentary elections, he added, "There will be a level-playing field during the upcoming polls."
The meeting was attended by Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Nasimul Gani, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam, Director General of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Maj Gen Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui, and Maj Gen Abdul Motaleb Sajjad Mahmud, among others.
