Six people were killed and another person injured in lightning strikes in Cumilla, Netrokona, and Sunamganj districts on Monday.
In Cumilla, four people were killed and a teenager was injured in lightning strikes in Muradnagar and Barura upazilas on Monday, according to agency reports.
The victims include two farmers, who died in Muradnagar’s Kurbanpur, and two students, killed in Barura’s Haripur, according to police and witnesses.
The injured teenager was taken to the Cumilla Medical College Hospital in critical condition, witnesses said.
Bangara Police Station chief Mahfuzur Rahman said farmers Nikhil Debnath and Jewel were working in a paddy field at Kurbanpur on Monday when lightning struck them and killed them on the spot.
In Barura, several teenagers were flying kites in a field in front of the Karigari Girls High School, said Saiful Islam Biplob, a teacher at Barura’s Payalgachha Bahumukhi High School.
A lightning bolt then struck Farhad Hossain and Saimon Hossain, both of whom are said to be students, and killed them.
In Sunamganj, Rimon Talukder, 20, son of Jahed Talukdar of Atgaon village in Shalla upazila, was killed after being struck by lightning while he was herding cows near Kalikota Haor around 6:30 am.
In another incident, a minor boy was killed in a lightning strike on his way to his madrasah in Tiyashree union in Madan upazila of Netrokona in the morning.
The deceased was identified as Arafat, 10, son of Abdus Salam of Tiyashree Union of the upazila.
