A one-minute silence will be observed next Sunday (October 15) in Dhaka city, aiming to create public awareness of the adverse impact of sound pollution.
The programme will be observed from 10:00 am to 10:01 am.
Environment, forest and climate change secretary Dr Farhina Ahmed disclosed the schedule at a press briefing at the secretariat on Thursday.
She said the programme would be observed with a slogan 'Let's stop sound pollution, observe a minute of silence'.
Public servants of environment ministry, public representatives, traffic police, members of transport bodies and scout members will form human chains from 9:30 am to 10:00 am on the day.
Holding festoons and banners, they will stand near Osmani Memorial Auditorium, Shahbagh, Uttara, Bijoy Sarani, Mirpur 10 circle, Gabtoli, Moghbazar, Mohakhali, Gulshan-01, Kamalapur, Buddhist Monastery at Sabujbagh and Jatrabari intersection.
Ms Farhina said leaflets and stickers would be distributed among drivers to make them aware of sound pollution by vehicles the same day.
She elaborated on the pernicious side effects of sound pollution on human health. People may lose their hearing ability and diseases like high blood pressure, sleeplessness, loss of mental concentration, heart problem and premature abortion may cause due to excessive sound pollution.
Sound pollution also casts a negative impact on the country's human resources and gross domestic product (GDP), according to Ms Farhina.
She further said that her ministry has been implementing a project to address the enormity of sound pollution.
Drivers, workers, government and private sector officials, journalists, traders, teachers and other professionals are being trained to build awareness of sound pollution under the combined project.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Bank (BB) has urged its officials on Thursday to direct their car drivers to observer a one-minute silence on the central bank premises during the same period.
