The interim government on Monday decided to intensify efforts against illegal vehicles, reintroduce electronic traffic signage, and regulate battery-operated rickshaws in a bid to improve the traffic situation in Dhaka.
The decisions were made during a high-level meeting chaired by Lt General (Rtd) Abdul Hafiz, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser on Defense and National Integration Development.
The meeting included Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor Md Khoda Bakhs Chowdhury, transport expert Dr SM Salehuddin, and senior officials from the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority, Dhaka Metropolitan Police, and both Dhaka City Corporations.
It was reported that 4,200 police personnel and 600 student volunteers had been deployed to help manage the city's traffic. Furthermore, between September 1 and December 31, 2024, law enforcement officials fined a total of 45,457 battery-operated rickshaws and 5,979 pedal rickshaws.
The meeting also decided to introduce an electronic signalling system at four key intersections in the city by February 6, 2025, as part of a pilot project. If successful, the system will be expanded to 18 additional intersections.
Besides, steps were taken to create a policy to regulate battery-operated rickshaws in Dhaka.
The meeting also instructed the police to ensure buses stop only at designated bus stops.
