Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman warned on Wednesday of taking stern legal action if anyone realises extra fare from passengers during the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr.
He further said that action will also be taken against those who will operate unlicenced vehicles on roads during the festival.
He said that if anyone is found selling tickets in some other places other than designated ticket counters of the bus operators then legal action will also be brought against them.
He issued the warnings at a meeting for reviewing the prevailing law and order situation, security of the homebound passengers and ensuring peaceful Eid congregations at the DMP headquarters in the capital.
Citing media reports, Mr Habibur Rahman said around 15 million people will leave the capital to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr at their native homes.
He said that police will ensure strict monitoring on roads, railways and waterways during the festival.
He also said that they (police) will keep extra vigilance on road transport considering the pressure of the homebound passengers.
Mr Habibur Rahman underscored the need for coordination among police members of Dhaka, Narayanganj and Gazipur to ensure smooth movement of passengers and passengers' safety and security during Eid.
