A Dhaka court has granted police seven days to question four men, including student leader Abdur Razzak alias Riyad, over an alleged extortion attempt at the Gulshan residence of former MP Shammi Ahmed.
A fifth accused, who is underage, was sent to a juvenile detention centre.
The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court passed the order after police sought a 10-day remand.
Following hearings from both sides, the court approved seven days’ remand to question Razzak, Sakdown Siam, Sadman Sadab, and Ibrahim Hossain in the extortion case
Police say the group went to the former MP’s home on Saturday night posing as coordinators to collect Tk 1.0 million, part of a Tk 5.0 million demand. All five were arrested at the scene.
Investigators say the group used similar tactics to extort money from others.
