Students have blocked the Barishal-Dhaka highway, demanding the resignation of the education advisor as part of a list of demands.

The demonstration began around 11am on Tuesday, at the central bus terminal in Nathullabad, Barishal city, and continued until 4pm.

As a result, all long-distance and local bus services across the Barishal Division have been suspended, reports bdnews24.com.

Hundreds of vehicles are stranded on both sides of the highway, causing widespread disruption and distress for passengers.

Zakir Sikder, chief of Barishal Metropolitan Police’s Airport Station, said: “Students are occupying the road. A large number of vehicles are stuck on both sides of the road.”

Protesting students said, “Our friends have died; some are still fighting for their lives. Yet there is no official list of the dead or injured. We demand justice. We will remain on the streets until our demands are met.”

Their demands include:

  • The education advisor’s resignation
  • A complete and accurate list of those injured
  • A public apology from the Army personnel who assaulted teachers
  • Compensation for the families of those killed

The decommissioning of outdated and unsafe aircraft, with the introduction of safer, modern jets.

They also demanded the removal of the education secretary, which had been met by the government in the afternoon.
