Supporters of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain have allegedly come under attack inside Dhaka South City Corporation’s Nagar Bhaban, with accusations levelled against an engineer and several others.
The incident took place around noon on Tuesday, injuring five people involved in a campaign demanding that Ishraque be sworn in as mayor, said Abdul Kaiyum, finance secretary of the Employees Unity Council, according to a bdnews24.com reports.
Speaking to bdnews24.com, Kaiyum said they had been staging a sit-in at Nagar Bhaban as usual when engineer Golam Kibria Rubel and a group of others arrived and launched the attack.
“After beating us up, Golam Kibria went to the engineering section and broke the seal on his office door, he added.
The office had remained sealed even after other sections of Nagar Bhaban were reopened, as per earlier instructions, Kaiyum claimed.
He alleged that Kibria, “backed” by Advisor Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, carried out the attack with the help of Arifuzzaman Prince, several city corporation staff and unidentified outsiders.
After briefly occupying the reopened room, the group left when more protestors arrived, he said.
“I too was injured during the attack and am now admitted to Dhaka Medical [College Hospital],” Kaiyum added.
Ishraque travelled to the hospital in the afternoon to visit the injured supporters.
Repeated calls to engineer Golam Kibria’s mobile phone went unanswered, while Arifuzzaman Prince’s number was found switched off.
Attempts to reach Kibria and Prince were unsuccessful.
