The lone suspect in the murder of 14-year-old schoolgirl Shahriar Sharmin Binti in Rayer Bazar has given a “confessional” statement before a Dhaka court, according to police.

Hazaribagh Police Sub-Inspector Md Matiur Rahman, also the investigation officer, produced 19-year-old Siam Hossain Emon in court on Friday.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Dilruba Afroz Tithi recorded the statement before Siam was sent to jail.

Prosecution Police Sub Inspector Abul Bashar confirmed the matter.

Sharmin was stabbed to death around 9pm outside her house on Wednesday.

Police arrested Siam, the sole suspect in the murder case, on Thursday morning from a house in Kalabagan. Police also recovered the knife used in the murder, along with blood-stained clothes worn by the suspect.

According to the investigation officer, Siam and Sharmin, a ninth-grade student, had been in a relationship since 2023 when they were classmates at Ideal School.

The relationship reportedly soured eight months ago after Siam began suspecting Sharmin of being involved with someone else, police said.

Though they recently reconnected, Siam remained suspicious, according to police.

On Wednesday, Siam allegedly purchased a knife from Tannery Mor before meeting Sharmin near Rayerbazar High School at 7:30pm, police said.

After a rickshaw ride to Banglamotor and back, the two were talking near Sharmin’s house when Siam allegedly “suddenly grabbed her and stabbed her repeatedly in the stomach and back” as part of a pre-planned attack.

Sharmin’s father Billal Hossain filed a murder case naming Siam as the sole suspect.

The suspect confessed to the crime and described the entire incident following his arrest, Matiur wrote in his court petition, adding that the confession was essential for a fair investigation.
