The Government of Sweden has provided 10 million Swedish Krona (approximately Tk 128 million) to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Bangladesh to strengthen access to integrated sexual and reproductive health services for vulnerable women and gender-diverse individuals.

The UNFPA Bangladesh stated on Tuesday that the initiative will expand stigma-free and rights-based health services in selected districts, aiming to ensure access to healthcare, protection, and support for those most at risk of exclusion.

Despite policy progress, many women and gender-diverse people in Bangladesh continue to face discrimination, violence and barriers in accessing health services, the statement said.

The Swedish contribution will support midwifery-led and community-friendly service models offering voluntary and rights-based family planning, HIV and sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment, gender-based violence response, mental health support and referral services.

The programme will also help strengthen the capacity of midwives, doctors and paramedics to provide non-discriminatory, confidential and survivor-centred care.

UNFPA Representative in Bangladesh Catherine Breen Kamkong said the partnership with Sweden would help reach vulnerable and marginalised people facing multiple barriers in accessing sexual and reproductive health services.

She said inclusive and community-based care would help ensure lifesaving services reach those most in need.

Sweden’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, Nicolas Weeks, said the support reflects Sweden’s commitment to human rights, gender equality and health services for all.

He said inclusive health systems are essential for resilient societies, and no one should be denied care because of social status or identity.

The programme will be implemented in partnership with government health institutions, civil society organisations and community networks.

According to the statement, the initiative will contribute to Bangladesh’s commitments under the Sustainable Development Goals related to health and gender equality.
