Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed has been appointed as the 25th Chief Justice of the country. In accordance with Article 95 of the Constitution, President Mohammed Shahabuddin appointed him to the position on Saturday.

Earlier, between Saturday afternoon and evening, Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan and five other justices of the Supreme Court resigned. Following the resignation of the Chief Justice, the Supreme Court announced that Md Ashfaqul Islam had been appointed as the acting Chief Justice.

However, coordinators of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement raised objections to this. They also demanded the appointment of Syed Refaat Ahmed as Chief Justice. In the face of their protest, the Ministry of Law then stated, "Acting Chief Justice has not been appointed yet."

Later, around 9:00 pm, the Ministry of Law informed the media about the appointment of Syed Refaat Ahmed as Chief Justice.

The five justices of the Appellate Division who resigned are Justice M Enayetur Rahim, Justice Md Abu Zafor Siddique, Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim, Justice Md Shahinur Islam and Justice Kashefa Hussain.
